The next Apple Store is in Bangalore, a 12h drive from here. However, things are not that bad. The University has an own Apple service, that's just about 12 min walk from my office.
I just brought my iBook there, and I was shocked, when told that a check up costs 2000 rupees. I'm quite sure that the main board is gone, and that there's no help anyways, so for a moment I considered not having the computer checked. But wait! I converted the 2000 Rs to Euros and found that 30 Euros isn't too bad for such a service. At Gravis Apple Store in Germany you pay 30 Euros for 15 minutes.
Still 2000 Rs is a lot of money compared to other prices. A three hour train ride might be 20 Rs. A meal with starter, drinks, and desert might be 200 Rs. (I usually get meals for around 50 Rs). You see the point? Not everything here is cheaper by the same factor. While work of uneducated people (see my post about the shoe maker), food, and transport are extremely cheap, you pay comparably much more for technical goodies (laptops, iPods and cameras are no cheaper here than in Europe) and educated workers. What becomes apparent again is the huge gap between the educated/rich and the uneducated/poor!
No pictures today. Since my laptop is gone, it's a bit more difficult to sort and process the pics for upload.
